Ownershift’s latest report
Owneress statistics 2025
Ownershift annually compiles and presents the latest publicly available statistics to show the differences between men and women's ownership in Sweden. This table is an updated version of the one Ownershift has presented in previous reports.
Ownershift released its first report in spring 2019, concluding that men own more than twice as much as women in all ownership categories. This year we see a category that is equal, but in general the result remains - men own twice as much as women - also in this report. The changes that have occurred over time are small but generally positive, both from year to year and over a slightly longer perspective.
One difference in this year's table compared to previous years is that all categories are presented as women's share in relation to men's, instead of women's share of total ownership. This means that we focus on the ownership that can be obtained disaggregated by sex. The availability of annually updated and sex-disaggregated statistics remains limited. The oldest data points are from the full year 2023.

Scientific method
Over the course of our research we noted that certain aspects of ownership have been understudied. For example, studies of ownership from an intersectional perspective (i.e. the interplay between gender and factors such as ethnicity, functional variations, age, sexuality, socio-economic status, and religion) are limited.
By understudied, we mean that the issues have either not been examined, that there are no studies based on large and trustworthy datasets, that hypotheses have not been tested repeatedly in different contexts, or that existing studies have not been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. This means that there is not enough evidence for us to be able to draw precise conclusions.
There is extensive research on the factors that influence entrepreneurship and stock market participation, but significantly less on the motivations behind owning forests and land. Additionally, there is a lack of studies examining how gender and ethnicity interact to shape ownership opportunities.
We can conclude that gender matters, and that more studies aimed at understanding the interaction between gender, ethnicity and ownership need to be implemented. Given the current state of research, it is thus difficult to draw conclusions about whether and how, for example, ethnicity reinforces the gender differences we have identified. Therefore, our reports to date focus only on the gender dimension.
We look forward and aim to find a path towards intersectional research in the near future.
The reportS are based on extensive empirical research in the fields of economics, finance, social psychology and business administration.
Ownershift Statistics
introduction to the stats
Ownershift’s digital library compiles statistics highlighting differences in ownership between men and women. Since gender-disaggregated data is limited and updated at varying times, data points may differ due to:
Government data collection, anonymization, and aggregation taking 1–2 years, meaning the latest statistics are typically from previous years.
Costs associated with extracting and compiling data, which Ownershift has not been able to cover.
Shifts in focus across ownership categories, leading to gaps in updates.
Since legal entities lack gender, Ownershift presents women’s share of private ownership. Where possible, private ownership is compared to total ownership, including state, regional, municipal, corporate, and other entities.
Analyzing company ownership is particularly challenging, as publicly available data lacks transparency on gendered ownership structures within larger corporations and family-owned businesses. More research is needed to understand women's and men's influence in ownership families and their stakes in companies.

what we do
Ownershift is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that works for economic equality, with a focus on ownership. Using a research-based approach, we work to make visible who owns what. We want to enable women's financial autonomy through a measurable increase of women's ownership
What is ownership?
Ownership is all capital that has a secondary market value. Ownership includes cars, properties, land, forests, companies, shares, music rights, patents, etc. Not everyone in Sweden owns capital, but many do.
